A Clinical Study on Elderly Neuropsychiatric Inpatients

Abstract
|
|
|
The authors attempted to study the clinical aspects of 91 elderly inpatients who hospitalized in the Neuropsychiatric department of National Medical Center for the past 8 years from 1975 to 1982.
The results are summarized as follows.
1. The elderly patients occupied 5.5% of the total psychiatric inpatients.
2. The ratio of sex was 1. 2 : 1(male: female) and the distribution of age revealed mostly in sixties.
3. Organic brain syndromes were the highest (71.4%) among inpatients and its contents were other neurologic disorder (32.9%), sequelae of CO poisoning(15.4%) and cerebral arteriosclerosis (13.2%).
4. Psychoses occupied 19.8% among inpatients and involutional depression was the mostly frequent in psychoses.
The proportion of neurosis was 8.8% which showed mainly depressive neurosis and hypochondriasis.
5. Associated physical illness had 25.3% of all inpatients which displayed cardiovascular disease (30.4%), endocrine disorder(21.7%) and eye disease(17.4%).
6. It was noticed that psychoses were treated for about 57 days which compaired mith 29 days of organic brain syndromes.
The results of treatment revealed improvement in 74.7% and worsening in 4.4% which were all organic brain syndrome.
7. All of admissions via emergency room (13.2%) were consisted of organic brain syndromes and in the 9 cases of transfer from psychiatric department, 8 were organic brain syndromes.
